ABOUT THE COURSE
The focus of this course is to introduce educators to a variety of printmaking techniques that can be incorporated into school art programs at various levels. Throughout the course class participants will learn basic procedural information relating to a variety of relief printing processes, monoprinting, screenprinting, and photocopy transfers, with an emphasis on nontoxic materials. Each process will be broken down to encompass methods that can be accomplished successfully with or without the use of a press. Participants will learn basic techniques through step-by-step demonstrations, hands-on technical exercises and viewing examples of artwork. Information sheets, troubleshooting guides and supplier lists for the processes covered in each module will be distributed.

Description:
This workshop is a great introduction to the Vandercook press. A high speed, versatile mainstay of small press publishers everywhere, the Vandercook is a cylinder proof press originally designed to produce trial impressions of type and image blocks. Participants will explore the many possibilities of block printing while experimenting with linocut, hand set type, and a selection of the instructor's own dingbats and pre-exposed photopolymer plates.

Introducing Open Studio

Open Studio, Canada’s leading printmaking centre, is dedicated to the production, preservation and promotion of contemporary fine art prints. Open Studio was founded in 1970 to provide a facility for professional artists to create original, limited edition lithographs, screenprints, etchings and relief prints. Open Studio operates primarily on self-generated income while gratefully acknowledging the support of The City of Toronto through the Toronto Arts Council, The Canada Council for the Arts, the Province of Ontario through The Ontario Arts Council, its membership and numerous foundations, corporations and individuals.

Class information:

Open Studio provides three education sessions each year beginning in early October, early February and early May.

8-week Courses in lithography, screenprinting, and etching are scheduled on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 9:30 and cost $260.00 + $45.00 materials fee (prices and/or schedule are subject to change). All levels of experience are accommodated.

Open Studio also offers a 4-week Power Printmaking Course that introduces participants to basic print media: relief, etching, lithography and screenprinting. Basic materials are supplied and the fee is $150.00.

4-week Open Sessions are also scheduled during our education program and are geared towards people who have printmaking experience and is designed as a transition for students from classes to renting at the studio.

Weekend Workshops that focus on fun and easy to learn processes as well as more advanced techniques are also scheduled during each session. Prices vary.

We have also introduced Printmaking for Educators, a course that introduces educators to a variety of printmaking techniques that can be incorporated into school art programs at various levels.
